Gerda’s Busy Hands

Gerda Percival’s hands are seldom idle. “In front of the TV,” she says, “I always have something in my hands!”

I met 90-year old Gerda at the Auburn Senior Center Arts and Crafts show. She sat with her pretty granddaughter, Baylee, behind a table covered with beautiful and useful things Gerda’s hands had made.

“These are my family’s favorites,” she said, pointing to a stack of cotton dishtowels with crocheted edges. I purchased one of her crocheted “rosettes,” pictured here, to decorate my new hat.

“I’m branching out,” Gerda said with a sparkle in her eyes, “to patio art and woodcarving.”

“Really?” I said, admiring a large, patio-art wreath made of shells.

“You must have good eyes,” I commented.

“Indeed, I do!” Gerda answered brightly. “That’s a good thing…there are lots of sharp tools in woodcarving!”

Busy hands, good eyes, and plenty of Bright Ideas…at 90 years old!  GERDA GIRL…YOU ROCK!

  1. Thank you, Sheila, for posting my handy work from Dishtowels to Slippers and many other knitted and crocheted items. I love working with Seashells also and make Patio Art of many sizes.
Thank you for all the nice comments from readers, they are all very much appreciated.
    Sincerely, Gerda Percival

  2. Oh my, her enthusiasm and creative spirit makes her seem youthful! I want what she’s having— picking up a crochet hook.
Thank you Shiela, appreciate the glimpses!!
