One day, I asked Kelly Lardner, “How do you begin to write a novel?”
Kelly got a faraway look in her pretty eyes and said, “First, I thoroughly research a particular place and time. Then, complex characters begin to appear in my imagination. They visit me all through the day. While I’m washing dishes, I might say, ‘No, it’s too early for you to kiss him!’ Or, ‘This is what you should say instead.’
“It’s very important that I like my main character, the ‘protagonist.’ If I discover I don’t like her, she has to go—or change—or be in another part of the story. I’m never alone or bored when I’m writing a novel; and one novel leads to another. Right now, in fact, I’m writing a mystery!”
I’m hooked on Kelly’s second novel,Β Rose Beads,Β (written under her pen name, Ke Ridolfi.) Kelly’s imagination did all the work—now I just read on to see what happens next.
Here’s Kelly, wearing her grandmother’s handmade rose beads!Β

It takes a special talent to write a novel and I look forward to reading it!
Yes, indeed, Kathie. I haven’t even come close to writing one. Thank you for commenting. Let’s get together soon!
When will I ever spell your name correctly, KATHEY?
Let’s read this in book club, Sheila! Maybe Kelly could visit us after we’ve read it, too!!
I would love that!
I loved Rose Beads! Kelly does a superb job of pulling the reader in to the story. Her characters are well developed and the events that weave their lives together are complex and relatable. I especially appreciate the voice of her book. It takes me back in timeβ¦on many levels.
Thank you for your comment, Sarah. I agree with everything you said. It’s always amazing to realize what talent our local authors have. (Don’t forget to write a review on Amazon for Kelly–saying exactly what you said here.) See you soon! Sheila
