Dana Burns: An Independent Farmer Speaks Up!

Must I become a vegetarian to protect myself against the harm done to animals and consumers by big corporations?

Let’s ask Dana Burns, an independent farmer. Dana’s devotion to food safety is as deep as her family’s farming roots.

“Don’t believe meat and poultry are always bad for you!” she urged me. “Just buy from small farmers. Shop at farmers’ markets. Know who raises your meat. See the chickens that lay your eggs.”

When Dana talks about farming, there’s a light in her eyes. When she describes her farming tools: a chisel plow, disc, and culti-mulcher, it’s clear these are the tools of an artist. When she describes her political efforts to counter the economic forces driving independent farmers off their family farms, she’s on fire with creative energy.

After meeting Dana, I’m buying my meat and poultry from BriarPatch. Now I need to find some real chickens so I can keep scrambling. Anyone know someone selling  eggs from happy hens?

I wish everyone could meet you, Dana. You have so much to teach us!

  1. Independent farmers do need to be supported and protected. As a vegetarian, I don’t eat meat but I make sure to buy only eggs that are Free Range (no cages)….It’s wonderful she loves what she does.
