Margo VanSlate: The Pied Piper of Friendship

Thirteen years ago, Margo was single and feeling alone. So, she put on her high heels, got into her car, and drove to a restaurant where there were lights and people and music. She sat at a table by herself and looked around. She saw this person and that person, also sitting alone. She invited them to her table. Then she invited them to her home. Her friends multiplied as they joined “Margo’s Group;” and they continue to multiply to this day.

What makes Margo such a magnet for friendship and love? Her pretty smile? Her insistent hugs? Her warm home? Her unfailing kindness? Her rules? (Only clean conversation allowed.) Her patient, “Tsk,tsk, tsk,” if one of us slips up? Is it Us—loving and respecting each other, under Margo’s spell? Is the spirit of Margo’s God?

All we know is, we bless the day Margo, the Pied Piper of Friendship, said, “Join us!” and we became her friends.

  1. Isn’t Margo something! What she did and continues to do takes compassion, imagination, noncompromising acceptance and energy! (Many of us have those qualities but not necessarily in tandem 😇.) Maybe we should invite her to the Book Club sometime…

  2. What a lovely lady with a positive attitude. Think of the lives she has changed by just reaching out. A lesson to all. Take the first step to bring others into your life. I’d love to meet Margo!
