Elizabeth Benham Pays-it-Forward

Maybe you’ve been there…for years you rushed to work each morning. Then, if you were blessed, you retired and swore, “No more obligations! I’m free!” Sometimes, though, as time passes, something unexpected happens. A ‘calling’ appears, and with it a resurgence of creative energy. In a recent visit with my precious cousin, Elizabeth, I witnessed this as I saw her commitment to the duties of Treasurer at her local Assistance League.

“What motivates you to work so many hours (for free) at this stage of your life?” I asked her. With a faraway look in her eyes, she listed the payoff: “I love the women on this team. I love knowing every cent the thrift shop brings in goes to causes like Operation School Bell, Hug-a-Bear, the Kiddie Closet, vouchers for needy people through eight nonprofit agencies, and other programs as well. I guess you could say, I love ‘paying-it-forward’ for the blessings I’ve received.”

I nodded, understanding perfectly. And with that, we both turned to our computers!

Cousins!
Hard at work!

I can so relate. I think it’s also wanting to pay it forward to mentor others. At least it was for me. I’d worked in the business world for 40 years and wanted to share some of my skills with others who either didn’t have that skill set, or were just starting out. Either was, it is nice to be needed…without the early alarm. : )

    1. Hi Libby … thank you for your comment. Knowing how you “roll with the thunder,” working with wreaths across America, etc., I doubt if your alarm clock would say you’ve retired! 🙂

  2. Elizabeth, you go girl! Thank you for doing all that vital work you do. I’m sure it’s appreciated very much at the recipient levels – as well as with your co-volunteers and organizers. It takes villages… Donna

  3. Good for Elizabeth. She is so right about the joy of being involved with an organization she really believes in.
The Assistance League is the very best thrift store and the ladies who volunteer are lovely.
